Controversial Benedict Canyon hotel project moves forward despite council member's concerns

A plan to build a luxury hotel in Benedict Canyon continues to move forward after the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday deadlocked on a vote to halt the review process. The 7-7 vote rejected a proposal by the council member serving that area to stop the administrative process for the 58-room Bulgari Resort Los Angeles project.Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, who moved for the halt, told the Los Angeles Times she was "deeply disappointed" by the vote.“This is a bad project,” Yaroslavsky added to the Times. “The process was deeply flawed. It’s Exhibit A for the idea that if you pay enough money to enough lobbyists and you pay for a [project labor agreement], you can build whatever you want, wherever you want.”In addition to environmental concerns of building on a hillside in the Santa Monica Mountains and worries about the impact on residents of the neighborhood, Yaroslavsky has also cited ethical concerns. The previous representative of Council District 5, Paul Koretz, supported ...

San Francisco resident Pia Harris hopes for reparations in her lifetime. But the nonprofit program director is not confident that California lawmakers will turn the recommendations of a first-in-the-nation task force into concrete legislation given pushback from opponents who say slavery was a thing of the past.It frustrates Harris, 45, that reparations opponents won’t acknowledge that life for Black people did not improve with the abolition of chattel slavery in 1865. Black families have been unable to accumulate wealth through property ownership and higher education. Black boys and teenagers are still told to watch out for law enforcement, and Black businesses struggle to get loans, she said. State task force approves payments, apology to Black Californians “I want them to stop acting like it’s so far removed, and it’s not currently happening,” said Harris of the lingering effects of slavery and discrimination. “I want them to understand that we’re still going through things now...

Think about the last time you went to a big concert, sporting event or play. Did you have to wait in line for a drink?A Los Angeles startup is trying to make long wait times a thing of the past with a new machine called Rotender."One thing that unites us all as Americans is we hate waiting," quipped Ben Winston, the entrepreneur working to make the Rotender a fixture in venues everywhere. The automated bartending machine looks like a jukebox, except it dispenses mixed drinks.Rotender founder Ben Winston. The machine holds sixteen bottles of liquor in a carousel plus an automated soda gun. The insides of the machine spin and light up while mixing a drink. "We found that people want a show they want an experience, and they want to see it get mixed," explained Winston. The retro looking setup is approachable and fun, yet reminiscent of something you'd see back in the day."It looks like it’s supposed to be there. It looks like it could be in your home, something you’re comfortable with," e...

Kurtenbach: There’s only one thing to do with Klay Thompson, Draymond Green

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:11:16 GMT

If we learned one thing from this disappointing Warriors’ season, it’s that this team has only one timeline: Steph Curry’s.Despite plenty of wishful thinking, there will not be a smooth, easy transition to a new, young, winning core. No, the Warriors will go as far as Curry can take them in the years to come. And Curry should have the other two members of the team’s title core — Klay Thompson and Draymond Green — along for the ride. While Curry has sounded like he wants to be basketball’s Tom Brady — playing until heaven knows when — he has three seasons remaining on his current contract with the Warriors. That’s a long time in the ever-changing NBA, but it’s a perfect runway for the Dubs’ troika, of which the mortal two showed their age this past season. If the Warriors’ top priority this offseason should be to re-sign president of basketball operations Bob Myers, the next thing they should do is sign Green and Thompson to extensions that line up with Curry’s contract. The Warriors aren...

OAKLAND — Athletics manager Mark Kotsay was bleary-eyed as he attempted to sort through a 9-8 win Tuesday night over the Arizona Diamondbacks in 12 innings. It almost took questions from the assembled media to remind him exactly of what had just transpired.“I’m exhausted,” Kotsay said. “As I’m sure all of you are.”By the time the game ended after four hours and nine minutes, probably less than a third of the paid attendance of 3,261 were still there and many of them were howling like wolves for the duration of extra innings.Seriously.It ended when rookie Estuery Ruiz singled off the glove of Arizona shortstop Nick Ahmed with the bases loaded, driving in the winning run in the 12th inning. With the Athletics 24 games under .500 at 10-34, no single win is going to vault them into relevance. Which doesn’t mean there wasn’t some good stuff worth reviewing in what could be one of their most memorable wins of a forgettable season. Here ar...
