KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — New York had its hot dog eating contest to celebrate Independence Day. But the Florida Keys had a sweeter alternative on Tuesday. The Key Lime Pie Eating Championship in Key West, where Key lime pie originated, was won by Joshua Mogle, a 38-year-old Altoona, Iowa, tire manufacturing manager.Mogle plunged face-first into a 9-inch pie smothered with whipped cream during the challenge, whose rules forbid contestants to use their hands. The gooey competition has become a subtropical substitute to Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest.Mogle consumed the confection in three minutes and 35 seconds, besting 24 rivals in the culmination of Key West’s five-day Key Lime Festival.“Eat… eat… eat… always have pie in my mouth,” said Mogle, when asked about the strategy he employed.Experts believe Key lime pie was developed in the late 1800s in Key West. Its primary ingredients are condensed milk, egg yolks and the juice of tiny yellow Key limes, typically w...DeSantis super PAC spokesman acknowledges campaign is ‘way behind’ Trump

(CNN) — A spokesman for a super PAC backing Ron DeSantis acknowledged that the Florida governor and GOP presidential candidate is “way behind” in national polling and is “fighting uphill” to defeat former President Donald Trump in the 2024 primary.“Right now, in national polling, we are way behind. I’ll be the first to admit that,” Steve Cortes, an ex-Trump adviser who is now a national spokesman for the pro-DeSantis Never Back Down super PAC, said during a Twitter Spaces event on Sunday. “I believe in being really blunt and really honest. It’s an uphill battle.”DeSantis has been trailing Trump in polling for months, but Cortes’ admission was a moment of surprising candor from a top DeSantis operative. The former Trump ally said he remained optimistic about the Florida governor’s prospects, however.“I don’t think it’s an unwinnable battle by any stretch,” Cortes said.According to the latest CNN polling, 47% of Republicans and Republican-leaning registered voters said Trump is their ...Marlins center fielder Davis is carted off the field with an apparent knee injury

Marlins center fielder Jonathan Davis was carted off the field after sustaining an apparent right knee injury in Miami’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.Davis chased and dived as he attempted to catch Tommy Edman’s deep drive to lead off the fifth inning. Davis briefly had the ball in his glove but lost possession as he rolled on the warning track and immediately started favoring his knee. The 31-year-old Davis, acquired from Detroit on May 22, figured to get extended time in center field after starter Jazz Chisholm Jr. was placed on the injured list Monday because of a left oblique strain. Davis also stepped in for Chisholm while he was sidelined with a turf toe injury last month.State police temporarily stop entry onto the Esplanade ahead of Boston Pops Fourth of July Spectacular

By MAJDI MOHAMMED and IMAD ISSEID (Associated Press)JENIN, West Bank (AP) — The Israeli military began withdrawing troops from a militant stronghold in the occupied West Bank late Tuesday, security officials said, winding down an intense two-day operation that killed at least 12 Palestinians, confiscated hundreds of weapons and left a wide swath of damage in its wake. But heavy fighting between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants continued in parts of the Jenin refugee camp, delaying the planned pullout. The development came hours after a Hamas militant rammed his car into a crowded Tel Aviv bus stop and began stabbing people, wounding eight, including a pregnant woman who reportedly lost her baby. The attacker was killed by an armed bystander. Hamas said the attack was revenge for the Israeli offensive.Visiting a military post outside Jenin, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated the operation, one of the most intense in the territory in nearly two decades, wa...Red Sox Notebook: Nathan Eovaldi admits he misses Boston ahead of first start against his former team

Like most players who enter pro hockey as teenagers, Fabian Lysell encountered his share of challenges in his first year with the Providence Bruins. The B’s first round pick in 2021 (21st overall) traversed hills and valleys throughout his season before it came to a dead end stop when he was the recipient of a late, high hit from Hartford’s veteran forward Adam Clendening in the Calder Cup playoffs after Lysell had delivered a pass and cut into the middle of the ice, concussing one of the B’s brightest prospects and ending his first pro year.Lysell started fast, had a tough World Junior Championships for Sweden and then see-sawed the rest of the season. The skilled right wing wound up with 14-23-37 totals in 54 games, a decent output for a player his age, though not quite the totals that would label him a can’t-miss-kid.“It’s a lot of new things, a lot of new things to take in,” said Lysell on Tuesday. “I feel like the start of the year was really good, ...Latest news
