Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 16:22:34 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — “We thought we could die.”The Russian invasion had just begun when Nancy Pelosi made a surprise visit to Ukraine, the House speaker then the highest-ranking elected U.S. official to lead a congressional delegation to Kyiv.Pelosi and the lawmakers were ushered under the cloak of secrecy into the capital city, an undisclosed passage that even to this day she will not divulge.“It was very, it was dangerous,” Pelosi told The Associated Press before Sunday’s one-year anniversary of that trip.“We never feared about it, but we thought we could die because we’re visiting a serious, serious war zone,” Pelosi said. “We had great protection, but nonetheless, a war — theater of war.”Pelosi’s visit was as unusual as it was historic, opening a fresh diplomatic channel between the U.S. and Ukraine that has only deepened with the prolonged war. In the year since, a long list of congressional leaders, senators and chairs of powerful committees, both Democrats and Republicans,...

Working Strategies: Absorbing ‘failing’ (fired) at 50 – or 60, or 70 …

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 16:22:34 GMT

Amy LindgrenWhat does it mean to be fired at 50, or even 60, or 70? For baby boomers and older Gen-Xers, there may be an extra dose of humiliation based on cultural conditioning. In years past, more than today, being let go from your job meant you had failed. For many in this age cohort, respect for management and hierarchy is deeply ingrained, making it difficult to interpret the situation without an extra helping of self-judgment for having done something wrong or let someone down. But what if there’s something else at play? The reasons for letting an older employee go could be the same as for a younger employee, or they could be unique to the individual.Assuming they didn’t actually fail at their jobs, here are a few reasons workers in the upper age ranges might be cut.• Age. Might as well start with the hot-button topic: age bias. Employers have been known to make decisions based on age, even when the affected employee is working as effectively as younger teammates.By federal law,...

Cities with the worst commute in Missouri

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 16:22:34 GMT

Canetti // ShutterstockCities with the worst commute in MissouriWhen the COVID-19 pandemic made millions of Americans remote workers, it also abruptly ended many of the commutes that bookend the workday. As some of those workers return to the office, conversations around the drawbacks of commutes have become more intense. For a while, those workers enjoyed more time in the morning and evening that wasn't spent simply traveling to and from work—an unpaid portion of the day that ate up time and energy. And it's not a small amount of time, either: Pre-pandemic, the average commute in the U.S. was a hair over 27 minutes one way, according to Census Bureau data. It was a record high. Cumulatively, 27 minutes each way translates to 54 minutes a day, or four-and-a-half hours per week. That's 18 hours a month and 216 hours a year spent commuting. Those who commute know it's not particularly idyllic. While a very small portion of workers live in the ideal scenario—a short, walkable distance f...

Why Nuggets’ Jamal Murray is “built for” the NBA playoff stage

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 16:22:34 GMT

Like sun-soaked days over Wash Park or tulips bursting at the Botanic Gardens, even Jamal Murray has a few tells about what time of year it is.In the first-round playoff series against Minnesota, Murray burnished his reputation as a playoff assassin. In just his second postseason game since September 2020, Murray eviscerated the Wolves for 40 points. Less than a week later, he hung 35 more to send them into the offseason. And yet the signals Nuggets coach Michael Malone derives from his lead guard, suggesting a playoff focus has consumed him, have nothing to do with scoring points.“Defense is a big one, how locked in is he? How engaged is he?” Malone told The Denver Post. “The other one is his rebounding. At his size and strength, if he played like this all year long, he’d be a perennial All-Star.”Malone spotted another tell when his burly guard insisted on guarding Anthony Edwards, Minnesota’s top scoring threat, in the first round.“’No, you’re not hiding me,” Malone sai...

The recipe for McDonald's Big Mac sauce is no secret — just don't use this ingredient

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 16:22:34 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – This week, McDonald’s began offering its Big Mac sauce (aka “special sauce”) in prepackaged dipping cups, providing an option for customers who want a little extra sauce to put on their fries, their burgers, or even their Oreo McFlurries, as was suggested by a fan with seemingly no self-control whatsoever. But those dipping cups aren’t free. While they’re complementary for customers who purchase Chicken McNuggets through the McDonald’s app, everyone else will need to order the dipping cups à la carte for a small fee. How do you pronounce ‘Whataburger’? Twitter post sparks debate Still, there is another option for customers who want to obtain some extra Mac sauce on the cheap: They can make it themselves. At least two McDonald’s insiders have revealed their recipes for Big Mac sauce over the last decade or so, including former chef Dan Coudreaut and former corporate chef Mike Haracz. It should be noted, however, that both Coudreaut and Haracz’s (extremely similar) recipes...

Willie Nelson at 90: Country music’s elder statesman still on the road again

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 16:22:34 GMT

(The Conversation) - Willie Nelson’s unofficial theme song, “On the Road Again,” remains accurate as he turns 90 on April 29, 2023. The country music legend is on tour, with dates scheduled into October 2023.Assessing Nelson’s legacy is challenging because there are so many Willies to assess. There is historical Willie Nelson, child of the Depression. There is iconic Willie Nelson, near embodiment of Texas myth. There is outlaw Willie Nelson, revolutionizing the country music industry. There is activist Willie Nelson, Farm Aid’s co-founder and biofuel pioneer. There is Willie Nelson the songwriter of rare and poignant gifts, and more Willie Nelsons yet to be named. As a Texas music historian, I find that Nelson’s legacy also challenges appraisal because the concept assumes closure, a pastness, while the man at 90 still seems to be active everywhere. The LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas recently announced the Willie Nelson Endowment Upli...
