(NEXSTAR) - Have you ever found yourself at a crosswalk, waiting for the walk sign to appear as traffic buzzes by. And even though you press the crosswalk button - maybe multiple times - it seems to take forever for the light to change in your favor. While some slow-changing stop lights just need you to tell them you’re there, some crosswalk signals don’t care how many times you press the crosswalk button - it’ll change when it’s ready. Let’s explain. It’s not exactly clear when and where the first walk/don’t walk signs were installed, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. TORONTO (AP) — Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward was placed on the 10-day injured list with facial fractures on Sunday, a day after he was hit by a 91 mph pitch from Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah.Ward was taken to a Toronto hospital after being struck in the fifth inning of Saturday’s 6-1 loss. He was released from the hospital Saturday evening.To replace Ward, the Angels selected the contract of infielder Kevin Padlo from Triple-A Salt Lake.Batting with the bases loaded, Ward was hit by a 2-0 pitch from Manoah. (KTLA) - A security guard at a nightclub was killed after being brutally beaten by a large mob in Hollywood early Sunday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers responded to the Dragonfly Hollywood nightclub in the 6500 block of Santa Monica Boulevard near Wilcox Avenue around 2 a.m. on reports of a group of 10 people attacking one person, police said.“The victim was working at this nightclub, and a large group – for unknown reasons – confronted that security guard, causing him to fall into the street,” said LAPD West Bureau Homicide Division Detective Samuel Marullo. “At which time the group advanced and kicked and stomped him to death.” Police are still investigating whether the fight began inside the club and spilled onto the street or if it began outside entirely. LOUIS - Winds peaked at nearly 80 miles per hour at the St. Louis Lambert Regional Airport during an intense afternoon storm system Saturday afternoon, one that caused some scattered damage around St. Charles County. FOX 2's extreme weather specialist Chris Higgins describes the winds as some of the worst he has ever seen from a non-tornado or non-hurricane warned storm. He witnessed strong winds and heavy rainfall around 3:30 p.m. near Highway K in St. Charles County. Community officials are currently surveying damages. FOX 2 has learned of more than 100,000 power outages in the St. Louis metro and tens of thousands in St. Charles County. ST. LOUIS - A man is in custody after a shooting that involved police officers in St. Louis City.It happened around 8:32 p.m. on the 5500 block of Grand Avenue, where a woman was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm. The extent of the victim's injuries have not yet been revealed. Execution of Johnny Johnson will proceed on Aug. 1, stay lifted While on scene, the suspect opened fire directed towards the officers. Special commemorations will take place in Charleroi next month in memory of one of the worst ever disasters in Belgium.On 8 August 1956 some 262 miners perished in the Bois du Cazier in Marcinelle.They included 136 Italians, more than half the victims.Today, the site is preserved as an industrial heritage site and a museum now stands on the site of the old mine.The commemorations on 8 August will start at 8 am, almost the same time as the fire started destroying the mine that killed so many. In the main square of the old mine a bell donated by Italian bell makers was installed.It will chime 262 times, once for each victim. A lone voice will then call out the names of the victims, one after another.Former miners and relatives of victims’ families are expected to attend the commemoration. A plane crash killed three people and caused an aircraft hangar to go up in flames in San Bernardino County.According to a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson, a single-engine Beechcraft P35 crashed during departure at Cable Airport in Upland around 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning with three people on board. “Three occupants of aircraft located deceased,” SBFD tweeted. “Investigators enroute.” Nightclub security guard beaten to death in Hollywood Preliminary information from the San Bernardino County Fire Department indicated that fire crews were on scene at the airport early Sunday morning fighting flames that had engulfed an aircraft hangar.Fire officials later confirmed that the hangar fire was extinguished.The FAA and the NTSB are handling the investigation.This is a developing story.
