Last month, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced D.C. had inked a deal with a company seeking to build a massive $500 million complex in the District. No, it’s not for a new Commander’s stadium or swanky hotel. The agreement is with an Austrian-based company that hopes to build an indoor spa and water park the size of 10 baseball fields somewhere in the nation’s capital. The exclusive deal Bowser announced called for a one-year period in which the Therme Group would only consider locations in D.C. — not anywhere else in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia or Pennsylvania — for its next “Therme” spa.D.C. officials hail the potential project as a key part of D.C.’s “comeback” from post-pandemic economic uncertainty and the idea has support from some local business leaders. But, a month into the exclusive agreement, WTOP’s DMV Download podcast digs into the deal: Just what is a Therme? Some Dutch people seeking euthanasia cite autism or intellectual disabilities, researchers say

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 15:00:35 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Several people with autism and intellectual disabilities have been legally euthanized in the Netherlands in recent years because they said they could not lead normal lives, researchers have found. The cases included five people younger than 30 who cited autism as either the only reason or a major contributing factor for euthanasia, setting an uneasy precedent that some experts say stretches the limits of what the law originally intended. In 2002, the Netherlands became the first country to allow doctors to kill patients at their request if they met strict requirements, including having an incurable illness causing “unbearable” physical or mental suffering. Between 2012 and 2021, nearly 60,000 people were killed at their own request, according to the Dutch government’s euthanasia review committee. To show how the rules are being applied and interpreted, the committee has released documents related to more than 900 of those people, most of whom were older and had c...

Explained: Europe’s new data law

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 15:00:35 GMT

Industrial manufacturers in Europe sense the opportunity of big data — but Brussels is about to change the rules on how to tap into it.European Union legislators struck a deal Tuesday evening on a landmark bill that aims to regulate who can access and share data generated by connected machines and devices, both on the work floor and at home. The new law is a response to the untapped potential of industrial data in Europe, as 80 percent of machine or device-generated data is never used. The slow pace of its data economy is a threat to Europe’s industrial base — where the Continent still holds considerable sway — and data will be key for the deployment of artificial intelligence technologies in coming years. The EU’s Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton warned last week that underusing industrial data is “holding back its huge potential for growth and innovation.”Still, Europe’s effort to regulate itself into a thriving industrial data economy has gained little attention.
